Bulldogs take home second at Charger Invite

The Van Meter Bulldogs wrestling team competed at the AC/GC Charger Invitational on Jan. 28. The tournament hosted 22 teams and the Bulldogs placed second with 156 team points. The only team that led the Bulldogs was the Clarion-Goldfield Cowboys with 169.5 points.

The Bulldogs had five of their 13 wrestlers place in the top three of their weight classes. There were also five Cowboys that placed in the top three of their weights, although the Bulldogs only had two wrestlers not place, the Cowboys had five of their 14.

Colby Wiederholt placed first in the 106 pound weight class and earned another 25 points for the Bulldogs. In his quarterfinal match, Wierderholt won by major decision (9-0) over Daltin Roest from Manson Northwest Webster. Wiederholt then won the semifinal round by a 7-2 decision over Easton Benson from AC/GC. His last match of the day was for first place where he won in a 6-4 sudden victory over Zane Ziegler of Underwood.

Only a single Bulldog placed second at the Charger Invitational. This Bulldog was Tyler Haynes in the 113 pound match. Haynes won his first match of the day by fall over Ben Oehlert if Clarion-Goldfield in just 1:45. In the quarterfinal match, he won by a 4-2 decision over Peyton Clipperton from Coon Rapids-Bayard. Haynes then won the semifinal match over Cale Dumbaugh (Nevada) by a 3-2 decision. Haynes was in line to win the 113 pound weight class when he took on Underwood's Logan James. James ended up beating Haynes by a 12-2 major decision, placing him in second.

The Bulldogs had three wrestlers place third, which included Caleb Swalla, Caleb Button and Derrin Sesker.

Swalla wrestled in the 145 pound weight class and earned the Bulldogs 17.50 team points. In his first match of the day, Swalla won by a 16-0 technical fall over Jesse Carlton from Griswold. In the quarterfinals, Swalla wrestled Kamren Jergenson from Clarion-Goldfield and won by an 11-3 major decision. His first loss of the day was in the semifinal match where he lost by sudden victory to AC/GC's Logan Scheuermann. When placed in the third consolation round, Swalla won by major decision (13-3) over Carter Hilgenberg of Coon Rapids-Bayard. Swalla's last match of the day was for third place. He won by a 7-2 decision over Ogden's Jacob Kathman.

Button earned another 20 points for the Bulldogs at 152 pounds. In the first championship round, Button pinned Austin Burger of Manson Northwest Webster in 1:40. In the quarterfinal round, he pinned Zachary McCloud from Ogden in 3:51. Button moved on to the semifinals where he wrestled Panorama's Tyler Van Houten. Van Houten won by a 5-1 decision over Button that placed him in the consolation rounds. Button won his consolation match by injury against his Clarion-Goldfield opponent. Once in the third place match, Button wrestled Austin Scharlau from Woodward-Granger and won by decision (7-6).

Sesker was the last Bulldog to place third. He wrestled in the 285 pound weight class where he also earned 20 team points. Sesker immediately moved on to the quarterfinal round after having a bye his first match. In this match he wrestled Kessler Tomas from East Union and won by fall in 2:20. Sesker has his only loss in the semifinal match to Spencer Trenary of Clarion-Goldfield. Trenary won after pinning Sesker in 1:06. In the third consolation round, Sesker pinned Panorama's Dan Jensen in 2:49. He then placed third when he won by a 7-2 decision over Clayton McFarland (Southeast Valley).

The Bulldogs next meet will be on Saturday, Feb. 4 at the Adel-DeSoto-Minburn High School at noon. This is the 2A Sectional tournament that six schools will be attending, including Van Meter.
