Mustangs headed to State Basketball Tournament
The Dallas Center-Grimes Mustangs are headed to the State Basketball tournament after beating the Boone Toreadors 54-43 on Monday, Feb. 27.
The leading scorer of the game was Steve Borneman. Borneman scored a total of 19 points after his five field goals, one three pointer and six free throws.
Trevor Grove was the second leading scorer for the Mustangs. He made one field goal, one three pointer and six free throws for a total of 11 points over the Toreadors.
The leading scorer for the Toreadors was Tanner Schminke. He scored ten points throughout the game from his two field goals and two three pointers.
Right behind Schminke was Gabe Krafcisin with nine points. The senior scored three field goals and three free throws.
Grove also led the Mustangs in rebounds. He had one offensive rebound and seven defensive for his final total of eight rebounds. Junior Jordan Humphreys had four rebounds for the Mustangs. He finished with two offensive and defensive rebounds each.
The leaders of rebounds for the Toreadors were Justin Aspengren and John Herrick. Aspengren had eight rebounds on the night, three that were offensive and five that were defensive. Herrick finished with one offensive rebounds and six defensive rebounds for his final seven of the night.
The 11 assists for the Mustangs were evenly dispersed among the team. Jack Duey, Brody Kleen, Trent Pride, Grove and Humphreys had two assists each and Junior Tanner Epple had the last of the 11 assists.
The Toreadors had five assists total throughout the game. Ethan Lewis, Lane Losh, Schminke, Herrick and Krafcisin each had one assist.
Kleen was the leader of steals over the Toreadors. He had two of the team's four steals. The other two steals for the Mustangs came from Borneman and Pride.
Juniors Trevor Vanpelt and Herrick had the final two steals for the Toreadors over the Mustangs.
The Mustangs only had two blocks the entire game, one from Grove and one from Kleen.
Krafcisin was the only Toreador to have any blocks against the Mustangs; he had a total of three.
The Mustangs beat the Toreadors 54-43 during the substate finals. The Mustangs' next game will be at Wells Fargo Arena for the State Basketball Tournament. The date and time of the game will be released on Mar. 1.
