Bulldogs advance to substate with victory over Norsemen
On Saturday, July 15, the Van Meter Bulldogs hosted the Class 2A District 14 Championship game. The Bulldogs played the Roland-Story Norsemen for the championship and won 6-2 to move on to substate.
The game began slow with neither team scoring in the first inning, but the game quickly picked up in the second inning.
Norseman Zach Shadlow began the inning with a double, he was able to advance to third base with Nathan Bell’s hit. Shadlow then stole home while Caleb Schlatter was up to bat, scoring the very first run of the game.
Schlatter ended up being walked to base, but was followed by two outs ending the top of the inning 1-0.
The Bulldogs began the inning with a hit by Carson Rhodes. Rhodes was able to tie up the score when he made his way around the bases from two more hits.
Two Bulldogs were left on base at the end of the second inning when the final two outs were called. The first inning ended tied at 1-1.
The Bulldogs began to lead in the third inning when they only allowed one Norseman on base.
After an out called against the Bulldogs, Anthony Lowman was up to bat. Lowman hit a single, but quickly advanced to second base with a Norsemen error. Lowman had stolen third base and Rhodes was walked to first when Brady O’Brien was up to bat. O’Brien hit a single which allowed both Bulldogs to score.
With Kaleb Booge’s hit caught in the outfield, the third inning ended with the Bulldogs leading 3-1.
The Norsemen tried to comeback in the fourth inning by scoring another run. Shadlow, Bell and Landon Greiner, the first three batters, all made it to base.
With the bases loaded, Will Larson was up to bat. Larson hit a single as well, his hit allowed both Shadlow and Bell to run back home.
Luckily, Rhodes was able to get the ball and tag out Bell before he could cross the plate. Rhodes’ play only allowed Shadlow to score for the Norsemen and ended the first half of the inning 3-2.
The Bulldogs came back with another three runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Sam Thompson started the inning with a hit that got him to first base. Thompson stole each base to advance his way around the bases. He even made his way home on a wild pitch while Drew Gordon was up to bat.
While Thompson was stealing bases, JJ Durflinger had been walked to base. Durflinger scored the second run of the inning when Lowman hit another double.
Gordon scored the third and final run for the Bulldogs with Mitch Pomeroy’s hit. Unfortunately, Pomeroy wasn’t able to make it to base, and the inning ended with a Bulldog strikeout, but they still led 6-2.
In the final three innings, neither the Norsemen nor the Bulldogs scored. Both teams only allowed one batter, per inning, a hit to base.
The Bulldogs won the district championship 6-2 and played the substate game on July 18 against West Marshall, State Center.
