Kester and Juergens run at USATF National Junior Olympics

Adel-DeSoto-Minburn’s Keaton Kester and Sadie Juergens are running in the USATF Hershey National Junior Olympic Track and Field Championships in Lawrence, Kansas this week. The meet goes from July 24-30.

The two Tigers began their track to the Championship in Ames on June 17 by running at the USATF Iowa Association Junior Olympics. The top eight runners in each race qualified for the USATF Regional 8 Junior Olympics which was held in La Crosse, Wisconsin which was held July 6-9 .

Kester ran the 100 meter and 200 meter dash in the womens 17/18. division in Ames and qualified for the Regional meet in both events.

Juergens ran the 400 meter dash and the 800 meter run in the womens 15/16 division. Juergens also qualified for regionals in both of her races.

At the regional meet, Kester won the 100 and got second in the 200. Juergens ran in the 400, placed sixth and ran in the 800 and got second. Only the top five in each race qualified for the National Championship.

Athletes traveled from all over the country to compete in this meet. The Tigers began their journey at the Championships Wednesday, July 26, when they ran their preliminary races.

In the 200 meter dash, Kester placed ninth with a time of 24.75 seconds. Kester was one of the 24 runners to qualify for the semifinals held yesterday (July 27). In the semifinals, Kester placed tenth, just missing the finals, with her time of 24.36 seconds.

Kester also ran the 100 meter dash on Thursday. She placed 22nd in the preliminaries with her time of 12.08 seconds. She will run in the semifinal race today, (July 28) at 12:55 p.m. Only the top eight runners will move on to the finals on Sunday.

Juergens placed sixth out of 51 in the 800 meter race on Wednesday. Juergens ran a 2:19.32 to qualify for the finals, which will be run on Saturday, July 29 at 1:15 p.m.
