The Waukee Warriors boys’ golf team hosted the Ames Little Cyclones in their first dual of the season on Thursday, Aug. 10 at Beaver Creek Golf Course. The Warriors won the dual over the Little Cyclones to begin the season 1-0.

“We feel good with today’s outcome,” said coach John Kotz. “Our upperclassmen led our team today and the younger players gained some invaluable experience on our home turf.”

The Warriors’ Griffin Parker was the medalist of the dual. The junior scored an even par 72. Little Cyclone Connor VanWeelden was the runner up medalist with just two over par (74).

Warrior junior Bennett Pedersen had 75 strokes against the Little Cyclones and was followed by senior Nathan Petsche who scored 76.

With his score of 79 strokes, junior Michael Vicente helped give the Warriors their first victory of the season.

“Griffin and Bennett have been playing great lately and led our team today,” said Kotz. “Nathan has put in a lot of hard work the past couple summers and it’s great to see his hard work pay off in team competition. Michael fought hard today and really competed. It was a good team effort from our players.”

The Warrior golf team moves to 1-0 in conference and overall season play. On Monday, Aug. 14 the Warriors competed in the Linn-Mar Invitational at Hunter’s Ridge Golf Course in Marion. On Aug. 17, the Warriors will travel to the Cedar Rapids Washington Invitational at Amana Colonies Golf Course.
