Bulldogs win WCAC rivalry over Hawks

The Van Meter Bulldogs girls basketball team hosted the Woodward-Granger Hawks on Dec. 8. The Bulldogs boosted their season record to 3-2 when they beat the Hawks 53-39.

The Bulldogs took the lead immediately in the first quarter when they outscored the Hawks 14-10. They continued to outscore the Hawks until the fourth quarter where the Hawks went 13-12. This wasn’t enough for the Hawks to make a come back though and they fell behind 14 points.

Junior Kelsey Roberts was the Bulldogs leading scorer. Kelsey Roberts had 17 points after scoring one field goal, three three pointers and three free throws.

Senior Alyssa Bice was the leading scorer for the Hawks. Bice scored three field goals, two three pointers and three free throws for a total of 15 points.

Out of the Bulldogs’ 32 rebounds, Lindsey Golwitzer led the team with eight. Golwitzer finished the night with three offensive and five defensive rebounds.

The Hawks had 36 rebounds against the Bulldogs. Katelyn Scharlau had 11 rebounds on her own, five of which were defensive and six that were offensive.

Emily Roberts had seven of the Bulldogs’ 14 assists to lead the team. Clair Lauterbach led the team with four out of ten steals. Jorja Hanselman had all three of the Bulldogs’ blocks against the Hawks.

The Hawks’ leader in assists was Kayley Dresback with her total of four. Natalie Helbling led the Hawks with four of the team’s eight steals. Helbling, Bice and Kaitlyn Peters split the team’s three blocks.

The Bulldogs were able to beat the Hawks 53-39 and now hold a 3-2 record while the Hawks have a 2-4 record so far this season.

The Bulldogs and Hawks both play again on Tuesday, Dec. 12. The Bulldogs will play West Central Valley at home at 6 p.m. The Hawks will be playing Ogden at home at 6 p.m.
