Girls' State Soccer: Dallas Center-Grimes, Waverly-Shell Rock reach Class 2A championship game
The Dallas Center-Grimes girls' soccer team picked off the 2-seed on Tuesday and the 3-seed on Wednesday. Come Friday, the Fillies will get a shot at the 1-seed.
Both Dallas Center-Grimes and Waverly-Shell Rock advanced to the Class 2A girls' soccer state championship game on Wednesday. The Fillies beat Norwalk, 1-0, in one semifinal game while the Go-Hawks defeated Spencer, 5-1, in the other.
As such, Dallas Center-Grimes, the 7-seed this week, will face top-seeded Waverly-Shell Rock in Friday afternoon's championship game. It will be the Go-Hawks' third-straight title game appearance and the second all-time for the Fillies.
Whoever wins will claim their first-ever girls' soccer state championship.
Avery Korsching's early goal leads Dallas Center-Grimes to 2A title game
Avery Korsching scored twice on Tuesday in the Fillies' 4-3 win over second-seeded Lewis Central. The junior forward scored again in the first half on Wednesday, which held up as the winner over third-seeded Norwalk.
As such, Dallas Center-Grimes will take a six-game winning streak into Friday's title game, set for 12:30 p.m. The Fillies improved to 15-5 overall, while the Warriors' season ends at 16-3.
Even more, Friday's title game between the Fillies and Go-Hawks will be a rematch of the 2019 state semifinals, which Waverly-Shell Rock won, 1-0.
Kenzie Roling's hat trick leads Waverly-Shell Rock in 2A semifinal
This year's version of the Go-Hawk girls' soccer team is much more explosive.
After a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Cedar Rapids Xavier on Tuesday, Waverly-Shell Rock had no trouble finding the back of the net Wednesday in a 5-1 win over Spencer. The win pushes the Go-Hawks to 18-2 overall. Spencer's season ends at 16-5.
Kenzie Roling, the hero in Tuesday's overtime win over the Saints, produced a hat trick against the Tigers, scoring her first goal just before halftime, then twice more after the break. She's scored four goals this week and 72nd of the season.
Even before Roling got rolling, the Go-Hawks already held a 2-1 lead thanks to first-half goals from Anna Stromberg and Morgan Aikey. In all, Waverly-Shell Rock scored five unanswered after Spencer's Brooke Moser scored in the 23rd minute.
