For leading Dallas Center-Grimes to the Class 2A state title and an undefeated season, Dan James has been named the Des Moines Register’s 2022 All-Iowa girls soccer coach of the year.

James led the Mustangs to the 2A championship game, where the Mustangs faced Waverly-Shell Rock, the same team that had come between DCG and a possible state title in the past two seasons.

“That was a little bit of an extra motivator,” James told the Register after this year’s championship game. “Waverly’s taken us out the last two years. We exorcised some demons. Everybody had a huge role on this team and it was good to finally get that monkey off our back and get the state championship.”

In addition to winning the 2A state title, the Mustangs (22-0) were the only soccer program in the state – boys or girls – to finish the season with an undefeated record. Some of the teams Dallas Center-Grimes beat on its way to the championship included Norwalk, Carlisle, Johnston and Waverly-Shell Rock.

James coached a goal duo of Maya Fritz and Kylee Albright that allowed just 10 goals all season. Fritz and Avery Korsching were both named to the Register’s All-Iowa girls soccer Class 2A First Team.
